U.S. Congressman Tim Ryan to Visit Miami Classrooms to Raise Awareness About Violence and How to Develop
Safe Schools and Mental Health

Congressman Tim Ryan, D-Ohio

On Monday, April 23, 2018 Congressman Tim Ryan (D-OH) will visit Miami to tour Miami-Dade inner-city schools that have successfully implemented Mindfulness-Based Programs designed for educators and for students of all ages.

In 2014 these schools successfully incorporated Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) for teachers and school counselors. At the beginning of the 2017-2018 school year, these same schools bolstered their training efforts by launching Inner Explorer, an in-classroom audio-series to help teachers and students practice mindfulness together simply and efficiently each day. (Click here for research and audio samples: PreK-K, elementary, middle and high school.)

Inner Explorer was set up in every classroom free of charge in a Florida Initiative fully funded through the generosity of Aetna, Inc.  It teaches students how to cope with and respond to difficult emotions and life circumstances that can ultimately break the cycles of violence and poverty.

This Florida Initiative is still available to other Miami-Dade public schools!

Congressman Ryan, a leading national advocate and proponent of Mindfulness-Based Programs, says:

“For a very small investment, we can prevent tragic future costs and heartaches in our communities. How much will we save in preventing substance abuse?  How much will we save in preventing suicides and mass shootings because children feel isolated and alone? My goal is to get us to focus more on mental health and well-being in the most important asset we have in America – well-functioning human beings.”

Successful programs in schools nationwide demonstrate significant improvements and outcomes resulting from Mindfulness-Based Training.

Violence is a national problem that is affecting children and teens across America. As of December 2017, the Educator’s School Safety Network has reported that 1,061 threats of violence are committed against U.S. schools – an average of 10.9 per day. The Network reports that violent threats or incidents have taken place in 48 of 50 states so far this school year.
