Why Become Certified to Teach Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR)?

A well-trained Certified MBSR Teacher has completed rigorous coursework and training, supervised teaching, mentoring and thorough one-on-one review by certified senior teachers prior to being awarded the distinction of being certified. It is a challenging pathway as set forth by both:

  • University of Massachusetts Medical School (UMMS) Center for Mindfulness (CFM)
  • University of California San Diego (UCSD) Center for Mindfulness (CFM)

The Miami Mindfulness MBSR Practicum is the second step in the MBSR Certification Pathway outlined on the UCSD Center for Mindfulness MBPTI. It is being taught by Valerie York-Zimmerman.

The MBSR PRACTICUM is an in-depth, comprehensive, interactive practice teaching program emphasizing kindness, compassion and excellence. This is a group-based program taught over eight weeks allowing for the training and practice teaching to become thoroughly absorbed in a consistent, step-by-step process. Studies have shown that group-based learning with expert and peer support such as this Practicum is more effective and helps change habits.

How Miami Mindfulness Is Qualified to Offer This Practicum

Valerie is the founder and senior teacher at Miami Mindfulness. She is certified to teach MBSR by the CFM at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. What Value Do You Get From A Certification Accredited By UCSD/MBPTI

Receipt of MBSR Teacher Certification allows teachers to represent and market themselves as a “Certified MBSR Teacher” which can be an important distinction in institutional settings such as education, healthcare, criminal justice, etc.

What Participants Say About Their MBSR Practicum Training at Miami Mindfulness

  • "I have a husband, a young son, a daughter on the way, and a full-time job so traveling to a 9-day intensive Practicum course was not an option.  I am grateful to Valerie for offering the course in Miami and have found that having it run over 8 weeks has allowed me to reflect on the teachings and see the benefits of the practices as my life unfolds.  Valerie's depth of knowledge from studying with Jon Kabat-Zinn himself, as well as other mindful leaders, has created a solid foundation for my future courses."
     ~ Christiana, Employee Wellness Specialist
  • “Mindful practice / Meditation has become a daily respite for me.  Finding a few peaceful moments in this way has made a significant difference in my personal health, as well as how I respond to those in my daily life. The choice to enroll in the teacher training was out of interest to expand my personal practice and perhaps be able to share this gift with others.  Through the guidance of this course, I am learning how to seamlessly incorporate, in all facets of my daily life, the principles of MBSR.”
~ Wendy Nottoli, M.A., CCC, BCaBA, Speech-Language Pathologist, board-certified assistant behavior analyst and director, Kendall Speech and Language Center
  • “Having been an MBSR teacher for 20 years, Valerie brings a treasure trove of knowledge to the subject and teaches with enthusiasm and passion.”
~ Bill Durham, founder, Miami Meditation Center
  •  "The 8 week MBSR practicum with Valerie has been hugely helpful in discerning my own place in the world of teaching mindfulness and in developing as a professional mindfulness teacher."
~ Rodannie, 3rd grade teacher, Miami-Dade County Public Schools
  • "The MBSR Teacher Training Practicum is offered in a loving kindness setting while gaining the necessary guidance and skills as we journey on the path to becoming MBSR certified."
~ Olga, M-DCPS middle school teacher, college professor and LMHC
  • “I have noticed a very subtle shift in my awareness of time.  I am finding that I have a more "spacious” day, sort of like time has opened up for me. I am much less hurried and have many less moments of angst.”
~ Lucy, science teacher, private college-preparatory school in Miami
